Lot Description

A Pair of Chinese Enameled Porcelain Bough Pots, Second Half 19th Century
清晚期 粉彩開光人物圖花插一對
Second Half 19th Century

This unusual pair of bough pots is richly decorated, with each vessel flanked by a pair of Yinglong—powerful winged dragons from Chinese mythology. All four sides are adorned with detailed scenes of court ladies engaged in elegant pursuits, set against a delicately incised sgraffito ground, suggesting an evolution from designs originating in the early 18th century. These figural panels are separated by borders of lush flora and foliate motifs, which wrap around the upper section of each pot. The pieces are crowned by finely detailed covers, each pierced with five carefully placed drill holes.
Height 8 5/8 x Width 7 x Length 7 1/16 in., 22 x 17.8 x 18 cm.

Property from A Private Texas Collection.

This lot is located in New York.
