Lot Description

[CHINESE WOODBLOCK PRINT] Beiping Rong Bao Zhai Shi Jian Pu (Beiping Rong Bao Zhai Poetry Letter Paper). Beijing: Rong Bao Zhai, 1935.

Two thread binding volumes in one beige brocade case; the title slip of the case is by Luo Zhenyu, the volumes by Xiao Mao. Together 200 prints.

Between 1933 and 1934, Rong Bao Zhai collaborated with Lu Xun and Zheng Zhenduo to publish the Beiping Jianpu, and to recut the Ten Bamboo Studio Collection of Calligraphy and Painting. Building on this foundation, in 1935, Rong Bao Zhai independently compiled and published the Beiping Rong Bao Zhai Poetry Letter Paper Designs (Beiping Rong Bao Zhai Shi Jian Pu) in one case of two volumes, which included 200 examples of letter papers. Some were retained from the Beiping Jianpu, while the rest were commissioned by Rong Bao Zhai from leading artists such as Qi Baishi, Pu Ru, Wu Daiqiu, Xu Cao, Yan Bolong, Wang Mengbai, and Zhang Daqian, among others. With its red silk covers, superbly executed printing, the work exemplifies Rong Bao Zhai’s commitment to artistry and craftsmanship.

The 1935 edition of the Beiping Rong Bao Zhai Poetry Letter Paper is known with three different versions of the title slip, respectively written by the painter Xiao Xun, the bibliophile Yang Zhongxi, and the scholar Luo Zhenyu. However, the title slips were not consistently matched within each set: the slip on the case and that on the volume covers often appear in different combinations, and the contents of individual sets also vary slightly.

Case 12 3/4 x 9 x 1 3/8 in., 32.3 x 22 x 3.6 cm.
