Lot Description
A Painting of Rao Jag Singh of Hatanagar Mounted on a Tan Stallion, Marwar, Jodhpur, Circa 1840s
Marwar, Jodhpur, Circa 1840s
Opaque watercolor with gold on paper, depicting an important figure riding on a striding horse with three attendants, below a gauze backing inscription in Rajasthani in Nagri Script, identifying the horseman as Rao Jag Singh of Hatanagar.
Note:
Hatanagar was an important thikana (subsidiary state) of Marwar in northern Rajasthan, probably ruled at this time by the celebrated Maharaja Man Singh (r. 1803-1843). Many labelled portraits of local rulers were made and/or collected by Maharaja Man Singh to be kept in albums as a way to document the lineage, hierarchy, and power of his court.
Painting 11 x 7 1/2 in., 27.94 x 19.05 cm; Folio: 13 x 9 3/4 in., 33.02 x 24.76 cm.
Property from the Collection of Edwin Hardy, San Francisco, California.
