Lot Description
[Americana] Warren, Joseph. Autograph Document, signed
(Boston), April, 1770. Single oblong sheet, 3 1/8 x 8 3/8 in. (79 x 213 mm). Autograph medical bill, signed in the third person by American physician and Founding Father, Joseph Warren: "Major Doane to Joseph Warren, To Viz and Medicine to himself in April 1770 18/--£0.12.0" Docketing and notation on verso: "Boston July 4 1770 / Receiv'd the Contents for Dr. Warren for Mr. Samuel Nutting". Creasing from old folds; light spotting along edges. Lot includes an engraved portrait of Warren.
A very rare autograph document by Founding Father and leading early American patriot Joseph Warren (1741-75). Here, Warren pens a medical bill for a Major Doane, presumably Chatham selectman, Justice of the Peace, and Representative to the General Court, Joseph Doane (1721-78).
Born in Roxbury, Massachusetts, Warren was educated at Harvard, and practiced medicine and surgery in Boston. During the imperial crisis, he became an early leading figure in the Patriot movement in Boston, and served at the President of revolutionary Massachusetts Provincial Congress. Commissioned a major general in the Massachusetts militia, he was killed in action during the Battle of Bunker Hill on June 17, 1775. Due to his short life and early death, documents signed by or in his hand are rare.
This lot is located in Philadelphia.
