Lot Description
[Black Sun Press] Hindu Love Book
Paris: The Black Sun Press, 1928. First and only edition, #2 of only 20 numbered copies on hand-made gray paper. 16mo. (74) pp., including front blank. Facsimile manuscript text in Persian, printed in black and in red within gilt and black ruled border; colophon printed in English. Illustrated with 27, largely erotic, hand-colored miniatures. Publisher's dark navy blue morocco, stamped in gilt with a Persian-style arabesque pattern, small losses to spine ends, light wear to joints; all edges trimmed; brown leather endleaves; in tan buckram chemise. Minkoff A-14
One of the rarest of the Black Sun Press publications, being a facsimile of a Hindu erotic love manual "taken from an ancient manuscript found in Damascus." (from the colophon). "Since the twenty copies of Moon Letter (the original title of the Damascus manuscript by Dehzad Nezaki was Mah-Name) would undoubtedly have run afoul of customs officials in America and England, despite the fact that it was smaller than one's palm, Harry [Crosby] arranged to dispose of them in France, discreetly, and for the substantial sum of a thousand francs..." (Ford, Published in Paris, p. 182).
Rare to auction, according to RBH this is only the third copy to appear since 1993.
