Lot Description
[Art] Flocon, Albert. Jamnitzer Orfevre de la Rigueur Sensible Etude sur la Perspectiva Corporum Regularium
Paris: Alain Brieux, 1964. Deluxe limited facsimile edition, #16/25 numbered copies (from a total of 150). Folio. Illustrated with 55 etched facsimile plates from Jamnitzer's 1568 first edition, 19 phototype facsimile plates of Jamnitzer's original drawings held in the Kupferstichkabinett Berlin, plus an additional suite of etched facsimile plates on old paper, as well as two copperplates used in the production of this facsimile edition (for plates C. VI and G. III). Plates and gatherings loose as issued in publisher's faux vellum-covered chemise, stamped in gilt; in original drab cloth-covered slip case and chemise.
A fine copy of this very rare facsimile edition of German goldsmith Wenzel Jamnitzer's 1568 treatise on perspective, Perspectiva Corporum Regularium. Jamnitzer based his treatise on Euclid's Elements, as well as Plato's five solids, or "regular bodies": the tetrahedron, cube, octahedron, dodecahedron, and icosahedron, with the sections of the book consisting of strikingly engraved images of polyhedral variants, faithfully reproduced here by Swiss engraver Jost Amman.
Rare to auction, according to RBH this is only the third copy to be offered, and is the first of the deluxe issue of only 25 copies issued with the additional suite of plates and two of Amman's original copperplates.
This lot is located in Philadelphia.
