Lot Description

[African-Americana] Thurman, Sue Bailey. The Historical Cookbook of the American Negro

(Washington, D.C.): The Corporate Press, 1958. First edition, first printing. 12mo. (x), 144, (6) pp. Illustrated with photographic reproductions. Original pictorial plastic comb-bound stiff orange wrappers, printed in black, wear at spine ends, light wear along edges; scattered soiling to text.

A near-fine copy of this important and celebrated Civil Rights-era cookbook chronicling the intersection of African American cuisine, culture, and history. Published by the National Council of Negro Women, and compiled and edited by African American author and civil rights activist Sue Bailey Thurman (1903-96), this work is a celebration of African American history and identity, and "the result of knowledge accumulated through the years and presented in what we consider a new, unique, and 'palatable' approach to history." (from the Foreword). Arranged by month, the work presents recipes based on feast days celebrating important events and individuals in African American history, including "Emancipation Proclamation Breakfast" in January, a Johnny Cake dedicated to Crispus Attucks in March, New England clam chowder dedicated to the Massachusetts 54th Regiment in July, and much more.

Uncommon to auction.
