Captain James Burney served as rear admiral during Captain James Cook's second voyage, as his lieutenant during the third, and was among the crew members who witnessed Cook's death on February 14, 1779. The present volume was written during Burney's retirement and includes information obtained during Cook's voyages as well as subsequent voyages by various other explorers.
