New York: July, 18, 1739. Single vellum sheet, 21 1/4 x 24 1/2 in. Manuscript indenture, signed by Isaac de Peyster and New Jersey Governor John Hamilton; counter-signed by their wives Anna and Elizabeth respectively, Pierre Guillaume De Peyster, Philip Cortlandt and his wife, as well as Richard Ashfield and Charles Le Roux. Wax seals intact; creasing from old folds; two one-inch closed tears along same; scattered foxing.

Colonial New York City land deed between Isaac de Peyster, and Colonial Governor of New Jersey, John Hamilton (1681-1747).

The De Peysters were a wealthy landowning merchant family of French Huguenot descent. The patriarch, Johannes (1600-1685) immigrated to New York then called New Amsterdam, sometime before 1651, fleeing religious persecution. His descendants would include multiple New York City Mayors, Aldermen, Justices, and other public officials. Isaac was a nephew of New York City Mayor, and Governor Abraham De Peyster (1657-1728), whose daughter Elizabeth was the wife of John Hamilton.

The plot map details ten lots on Depeysters Street (now Pearl Street) in southern Manhattan, situated between Burnets Street (now Water Street) and Burnets Key (later John Street, and now Front Street). Landowners include Abraham De Peyster, John and Elizabeth Hamilton, Isaac De Peyster and his wife Anna, Pierre De Peyster, and Phillip and Stephen (Van) Cortlandt.

Never before offered for sale.

This lot is located in Philadelphia.
