Lot Description
[Religion] Calvin, John. The Institution of Christian Religion
London: Printed by Anne Griffin for Joyce Norton and R. Whitaker, 1634. Folio. Full contemporary calf, rebacked, light rubbing; some marginal worming to pp. 15-105, but not affecting text; marginal toning; very light intermittent spotting throughout. ESTC S107163; STC (2nd edition) 4425
Anne Griffin was one of only a handful of female printers active in London during the 17th century, having taken over her husband's printing shop after his death in 1621. Believed to be a Calvinist herself, Griffin's publication of The Institution of Christian Religion was the first of two pro-Protestant texts (the other being Thomas Becon's The Displaying of the Popish Mass) she published which nearly resulted in her press being shut down for sedition. The present work was printed for bookseller Joyce Norton, widow of the original translator, John Norton.
Together with:
Calvin, John
Vigilantissimi Pastoris, et Fidelissimi Doctoris Ecclesiae Genevensis
Geneva: Johannes le Preux, 1585. 8vo. Full contemporary vellum, significant loss to head of spine, soiling, rubbing.
