(London: Printed at the Ballantyne Press for the Vale Press, 1903). First edition (one of only 310 copies). 8vo. lxxv, (1) pp. Illustrated with 10 woodcuts by Charles Ricketts. From the library of English poet John Gray, with his book-plate on front paste-down, and with an autograph letter, signed by him, mounted to front free endpaper, to a Miss Jardine, sending this very book as a birthday gift and apologizing for the presence of his own book-plate in it (dated July 26, 1913). Publisher's limp vellum, upper spine lettered in gilt, yapp fore-edges; text largely unopened; scattered spotting to text. Ransom, Vale Press 40
John Gray (1866-1934) was an English poet and Catholic priest, and author of Silverpoints, The Long Road, and Park: A Fantastic Story. He is purported to be the inspiration for the fictional character Dorian Gray in Oscar Wilde's The Picture of Dorian Gray.
