Lot Description

[Americana] Lucas, F(ielding). Plan of the City of Baltimore, Compiled from Actual Survey...

Baltimore: Published by F. Lucas, Jr., 1822. First edition. Hand-colored engraved map, by B.T. Welch & Co. Inscribed on verso: "H. Fitz / Map of Baltimore / 1835 / No. 141 Allen St N. York". "Canton" added in black stencil in lower right recto. Laid down on contemporary linen; creasing from when folded, scattered separations along same; very small scattered losses along edges; lightly toned; faint pencil marginalia in left edge. 20 5/8 x 26 1/4 in. (524 x 667 mm).

Rare first edition of this engraved plan of Baltimore, by Fielding Lucas, Jr. (1781-1854), one of the city's most prominent early publishers and cartographers.

The inscription is likely by Henry Fitz, Sr., or Henry Fitz, Jr. (1808-63), the latter a New York and Baltimore-based pioneer of early American photography (among the first in America to conduct experiments with the daguerreotype process) and a noted optician and telescope maker.

This lot is located in Philadelphia.
