The Historie of the World was translated into English for the first time by Philemon Holland (1552-1637), who published the first edition of the present work in 1604. The original work, one of Pliny's best known and most revered, was published two years before its author perished at Pompeii during the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 CE.
