(xvi), 504; (iv), (503)-767, (1) pp. Illustrated with 24 engraved plates (including folding plates, maps, views, and plans), 50 engraved and numbered botanical plates, three full-page engravings, three engraved head-pieces, and in-text illustrations and diagrams (engraved and woodcut). Full contemporary speckled brown calf, morocco spine labels, stamped in gilt, spines dry, chipping at ends of same, joints cracked, boards worn and scuffed, extremities rubbed and worn; all edges trimmed; light spotting to text; some leaves darkened; scattered faint and short dampstaining in margins. First edition of this important account of French scientist Louis Éconches Feuillée's (1660-1732) expedition to South America, including his detailed observations on astronomical, botanical, and animal life in Argentina, Chile, and Peru, and elsewhere. Included is an account of the so-called Feuillée monster, a cyclopean sheep that he was purportedly permitted to observe while in Buenos Aires. A third, supplementary volume, was published in 1725, and is not always found.
