Lot Description
[Music] Meyerbeer, Giacomo Autograph Music Quotation, signed
No place, no date. Single oblong sheet, 4 x 14 1/2 in. (101 x 368 mm). Autograph music quotation, boldly signed by composer Giacomo Meyerbeer. Crease from old fold; lightly toned; pin holes in left and right margins. Includes a one-page autograph letter in French, signed by Meyerbeer to an unknown recipient, requesting a meeting at his office, dated May 17, 1849. Old pencil notations on rectos of both pieces.
Giacomo Meyerbeer (1791-1864) was a German-born composer, who was "the most frequently performed opera composer during the nineteenth century, linking Mozart and Wagner." (Matthais Brzoska, Meyerbeer: Robert le Diable and Les Huguenots, 2003). His unique style was formed from merging German orchestra music with Italian vocals, and his famous works influenced other giants of the Golden Age of Grand Opera, including Giuseppe Verdi and Gaetano Donizetti.
