Lot Description
[Americana] Doolittle, A(mos). A Display of the United States of America...
New Haven, (Connecticut): A(mos). Doolittle, Octr. 1st 1791. Hand-colored stipple engraving with etching. Third state. Laid down on paper and mounted to larger sheet; restoration with areas of infilling in top right corner and center left edge; repaired wear and closed tears along edges. 20 5/8 x 17 1/8 in. (524 x 435 mm). In mat and in frame ("M. Knoedler & Co.", New York, label on back). Hart 840b; Stauffer 521; Wick 25
A very rare engraving by Amos Doolittle (1754-1832), created in celebration of George Washington, the adoption of the Constitution, and the new federal government. Featuring "one of the most interesting" portraits of President Washington (Baker)--modeled after Joseph Wright's 1790 etching--surrounded by fourteen interlocking circles containing the seal of the United States and the seals of the 13 original colonies. First issued in 1789, Doolittle frequently reworked the image, updating the statistical information for each state, as well as modifying Washington's portrait, with no less than six versions issued in the 1790s.
Very rare in any state.
The Collection of Ambassador and Mrs. Ogden R. Reid
