Illustrated with an engraved frontispiece, engraved vignette title-page, and 38 engraved plates by Hablot Knight Browne ("Phiz"). Full crimson levant, decorated in gilt, front and rear boards detached; all edges gilt; gilt dentelles; original watercolor on leather, heightened with white gouache and with pencil marks, by Helen R. Haywood, on front paste-down, reproducing the plate "Meekness of Mr. Pecksniff and His Charming Daughters" (p. 14); silk endleaves and rear doublure; by Riviere & Son. Smith II, 7

First edition in book form, with a fine watercolor on the front paste-down by English artist and writer Helen Riviere Haywood (1907-95). Haywood is the great-granddaughter of the noted British bookbinder, Robert Riviere (1808-82), and is known for her fore-edge and binding paintings.
