[Americana] [Declaration of Independence] Livingston, Philip. Manuscript Document, signed


(New York): December 31, 1771. Bifolium, 12 x 7 1/4 in. (304 x 184 mm). Manuscript document, signed by Philip Livingston, Signer of the Declaration of Independence, as part-owner of a lease of land, to Dr. John Charlton and his wife; also signed by John Cruger, Jr., Leonard Lispenard, William Bayard, Isaac De Peyster, Pierre De Peyster, Pierre Van Cortlandt, and witnessed by Gerard Bancker; bottom of third page with autograph attestation, signed by Henry Holland, dated April 15, 1772. Wax seals intact; docketing on verso; creasing from old folds, scattered stains, some loss from ink corrosion; light offsetting from seals.

Pre-Revolutionary New York City land lease, signed by Continental Congressman Philip Livingston (1716-1778), and other prominent colonial merchants and politicians.

The lot was located on Broadway was leased to English-born physician Dr. John Charlton (1756-1806). Charlton was a well known surgeon who practiced medicine in the court of George III, before emigrating to New York. He remained in the city after the American Revolution despite his Loyalist leanings, and became the President of the New York Medical Society, and a trustee of Columbia University.
