London: Printed for Messrs. Baker and Leigh, 1776. In two volumes. Second edition. Folio. Illustrated with an engraved frontispiece and numerous engravings. Full contemporary diced morocco, rubbing; hinges in both volumes reinforced; toning and spotting throughout; minor offsetting; some marginal dampstaining. Provenance: Courtenay Edward Stevens (1905-1976), British classicist (ownership book-plate).
William Stukeley was an English physician and antiquarian whose work is considered to be of immeasurable influence to modern archaeology, with his work at the prehistoric monuments of Avebury and Stonehenge being of particular note.
