Lot Description

[Games] The Heiress. A New Game

(London: S. and J. Fuller, 1836). Large folding color lithographic game board, dissected into nine panels and laid on original green cloth-edged linen; verso with lithographed pictorial title panel, scattered light to moderate wear and soiling; box, playing pieces, game stands, and instructions wanting. OCLC 884287538

A very rare and charming early 19th century lithographed folding board game. Created for up to eight users, each player takes on the role of a Suitor (Parson, Peer, Lawyer, Dandy, Sailor, Soldier, Doctor, and Squire) whose goal is to win the affection of a wealthy Heiress. Each player is assigned a path on the game board that advances in 20 steps toward the center, with each step listing various stages of courtship ("Smiles," "Fear," "Hope," "Disappointment," "Doubts," "Expectation," "Adoration," etc.). The winning player is the first to reach the final stage, "Acceptation", and the Heiress's heart.

Rare, one of only three known copies. According to RBH, no other example of this game has come to auction. OCLC locates only two other examples, at the University of Virginia (with repairs, loss, and restoration to game pieces and instructions) and at Duke University (game board only).

This lot is located in Philadelphia.
