Lot Description

[Children's & Illustrated] White, E.B. The Trumpet of the Swan, Presentation Copy with an Original Drawing

New York, etc.: Harper & Row, Publishers, (1970). First edition. Presentation copy, inscribed by White on front free endpaper: "Isabel Russell / with my best wishes / and a loud ko hoh! / EB White / June 1970". 8vo. (viii), 210, (6) pp. Illustrated by Edward Frascino. Original blue cloth, stamped in silver and in gilt; blue endpapers; gift inscription on front free endpaper, below White's inscription: "For Jeff and Jane / summer of 1996 / Isabel Russell"; in original pictorial dust-jacket, bottom of front flap clipped, light wear along extremities, ink inscription on rear flap, noting the textual error on page 201: "Page 201 3d line from bottom should read 'beep' instead of 'ko-hoh' see EBW letter to Ursula Nordstrom at Harper & Row, Sept. 2, 1970. from 'Letters of EB. White, page 605".

White's aforementioned letter to Ursula Nordstrom reads in full: "I have another correction to add to your garland. On page 201, third line from the bottom, 'koh-hoh' should read 'beep.' This boo-boo on my part was caught by two alert children who reside at 1010 Fifth Avenue. (All my readers are extremely wealthy.) Their pa wrote me a very nice letter, and I wrote back and also sent the kids a book. Can this mistake be corrected in the next printing?" (Letters of E.B. White, p. 605).

Together with:

An original pencil drawing by E.B. White for his above work; on translucent paper, and attached with masking tape to the upper portion of larger wove sheet. Inscribed below image by Frascino: "Original Drawing by E.B. White published in "The Trumpet of the Swan'--EF"; pencil notations at bottom of larger sheet: "pic no. 3 p. 5 / To go with Sam Beaver's diary entry, Chapt. I." Lightly worn and soiled; small sticker underneath drawing.

Lot includes an autograph letter, signed by Frascino, to Mr. Jeffrey C. Adams of Belvedere, California, dated January 20, 1995: "Dear Jeff: Herewith the drawing by E.B. White for 'The Trumpet of the Swan.' It didn't seem right to offer it for sale along with my illustrations for the book, and, as it is unsigned, how would one price it? As a collector of Mr. White's work I imagine you will get the most pleasure out of having it. Best wishes, Ed Frascino".

This lot is located in Philadelphia.
