Lot Description
[Children's & Illustrated] Rackham, Arthur. Each one, tripping on his toe will be here with mop and mow
(London, 1926). Original watercolor, ink, and pencil illustration on paper for William Shakespeare's The Tempest, signed by Rackham in bottom right ("Arthur Rackham"); inscribed and signed by Rackham on verso: "The Tempest / No. 17 Each one tripping on his toe / by Arthur Rackham"; additional pencil manuscript on verso in another hand ("Tempest / Return to / A. Rackham / 6 Primrose Hill Studios / N.W."). 15 3/8 x 11 in. (390 x 279 mm). Mounted to board. In mat and in frame, with original Scott & Fowles gallery, New York, label on reverse, additional manuscript on same, "Mrs A's room center of bed".
A fine original illustration by Rackham, completed for his 1926 edition of William Shakespeare's The Tempest. The title comes from Act 4, Scene 1, spoken by the spirit Ariel: "Before you can say 'Come' and 'Go,' And breathe twice and cry 'So, so!' Each one, tripping on his toe, Will be here with mop and mow. Do you love me, master, no?"
