Lot Description

A Cotton and Wool Jacquard Coverlet by George Heilbronn

natural cotton and blue and red wool. Inscribed Fancy Coverlet Woven by G Heilbronn Lancaster O 1849. 87 × 82 inches.

"George Heilbronn (American, born French, c. 1811-1874), Lancaster, Ohio did his weaving at his home on Columbus street and Ohio Street, Lancaster, Ohio. In 1857, he advertised in the Ohio Eagle in Lancaster that he had procured new machinery, with which he was able to weave coverlets all in one breadth and without seam. He also stated that he had just received from the East Coast a variety of new patterns in the latest fashion and that he could supply the cotton yarn needed for the warp and necessary in weaving coverlets." Mildred Davison and Christa C. Mayer-Thurman, Coverlets: A Handbook on the Collection of Woven Coverlets in The Art Institute of Chicago, exh. cat. (Chicago: Art Institute of Chicago, 1973), 168.
