Lot Description

[Art] [Lelee, Leo] D'Arbaud, Jouse. Nouve Gardian


Aix en Provence: Soucieta D'Edicioun "Le Feu", 1923. First and limited edition, #44/500 numbered copies. Folio. Presentation copy, inscribed by author on half-title, "Per Art Alliance de Philadelphia testimoni de la vido garidano e oumage de Jouse d'Arbaud Aix en Provence 29 de Jun de 1931." Additionally featuring an original pencil an watercolor illustration, signed by the illustrator Leo Lelee, also dated 1931. Illustrated with 15 color plates after Lelee, all with tissue guards. Text in Occitan and in French. Tan paper covered boards, spine repaired, boards soiled and extremities worn, library label on spine; later orange silk tie taped to front and rear board; all edges untrimmed; marbled endpapers; perforated library stamp on all leaves (largely not affecting images or text); library book-plate on verso of front free endpaper; white library paper mounted on front paste-down; library pocket on rear paste-down; housed in archival box.

Warmly inscribed presentation copy of a Christmas story by French poet Joseph d'Arbaud (1874-1950), written mostly in his native Occitan dialect. The story is richly illustrated by French artist Leopold Lelee (1872-1974), and features an original watercolor illustration on an early leaf.

The Philadelphia Art Alliance, first founded in 1915, was the oldest multidisciplinary arts center in the United States, before its merger with the University of the Arts in 2018.
