[Sporting] Somervile, William. The Chase, A Poem: To which is added Hobbinol, or the Rural Games


Birmingham: Printed by Robert Martin and Sold by A. Donaldson, 1767. First issue (with "chace" in headline, p. 43). 4to. Extra-illustrated copy, with five hand-colored woodcuts, and 62 window-mounted or tipped-in black and white plates, as well 12 title-pages or chapter headings from other editions. Full red levant, tooled in gilt with hunting motifs, joints worn; top edge gilt, other edges untrimmed; marbled endpapers; by Bennett, New York; scattered light foxing; offsetting from plates throughout.

Extra-illustrated copy of Somervile's classic sporting poem describing hunting in medieval and Renaissance England. This edition was the first work printed by Robert Martin after taking over the press of John Baskerville, utilizing his famous type.
