[Sporting] (Egerton-Warburton, Rowland). Hunting Songs, Ballads, &c.
First Edition with Manuscript Poem
Chester: Printed for J. Seacome/London: Baldwin and Cradock, 1834. First edition. 8vo. 47 pp. Illustrated with color portrait frontispiece of Joseph Maiden and, 12 black and white plates. Original two-page manuscript poem by author R. E. Egerton-Warburton on front blank, titled "The Tantivy Trot", signed at the conclusion and dated 1834; additional manuscript poem on recto of final leaf, titled "The Lay of the Last Coachman", signed "G.M. Murray", and dated 1847. Publisher's purple cloth, title inked in black on spine, extremities lightly worn, corner bumped; contemporary ownership inscription on front paste-down, green morocco book-plate of Valentine Hollingsworth and previous bookseller's description mounted to same; in half red morocco over cloth slip case and chemise.
Scarce first edition of English poet and hunting enthusiast Rowland Eyles Egerton-Warburton's collection of songs and ballads, with an original manuscript poem.
Warburton (1804-1891) was born of an aristocratic family, and known for renovating local churches and estates in his home village of Cheshire, most notably Arley Hall. He was an avid fox hunter, and member of the Tarpoley Hunt Club, of which he became President of in 1838. In 1834, he published this collection of hunting poems and songs, eventually running through eight editions.
