Lot Description

[Science, Medicine & Mathematics] Pius, Antoninus, Emperor. Itinerarium Antonini Augusti et Burdigalanese


Cologne: Birkmann, 1600. 8vo (168 x 102 mm). Contemporary full vellum, 3.5 in. split along front spine, horizontal split along band, some soiling along extremities; toning, some minor worming throughout. Ownership signature "O. MacCarthy", presumably Oscar MacCarthy (1815-1894), French explorer, geographer, and archaeologist.

Itinerarium Antonini was "the first extant geographical work in Latin and the only Roman treatise of the classical period dedicated exclusively to that subject" (DSB) and comprises a complete descriptive view of the known world during the second century. The present edition includes a poem dedicated to cartographer Abraham Ortelius, recognized as the the creator of the first modern atlas and of whom editor Andreas Schott was a close friend.
