Lot Description
[Religion] Fox, John. The Book of Martyrs: Containing an Account of the Sufferings and Death of the Protestants in the Reign of Queen Mary the First
London: Printed and Sold for the Proprietor, 1741. Revised edition. Folio (374 x 235 mm). Frontispiece with 29 copperplate engravings (Preliminary and concluding leaves restored and mounted, several leaves with marginal tears not affecting text.) Modern quarter calf with spine in 7 compartments and 6 raised bands; ownership inscription of Henry Hodges. ESTC T138683.
Foxe's Book of Martyrs is a history of Protestant history and martyrology which was originally published as Actes and Monuments of these Latter and Perillous Days, Touching Matters of the Church in 1563 by John Day. The first edition contained over 60 woodcut illustrations depicting the gruesome deaths of various Protestant figures and was the largest publishing endeavor undertaken in England up to that time. Four editions were published in Foxe's lifetime, with the first abridged edition printed two years after Foxe's death; these later printings tended to heavily edit Foxe's original text to focus on the sufferings of Protestant martyrs in particular.
