Lot Description
[Americana] Mitchell, Samuel Augustus. The Tourist’s Pocket Map of the State of Illinois Exhibiting its Internal Improvements, Roads, Distances &c.
Philadelphia: S. Augustus Mitchell, 1837. 16mo. Hand-colored engraved folding map (381 x 327 mm) by E.F. Woodward (toning). Housed within original black straight-grain morocco covers lettered in gilt with original "Public Lands" printed label on front pastedown, minor rubbing; ownership inscription of Isaac Sheppard modern folding case.
The Tourist's Pocket Map of the State of Illinois depicts surveyed townships, geographic features, and major industries including an inset map of the Galena mine region. Side tables show steamboat routes and population statistics as of 1830 with a dwindling number of slaves which would later be outlawed in 1848. With Illinois considered to be one of the most important states east of the Mississippi River at this time, Mitchell's map depicts a vibrant, ever-growing state that highlights population growth and natural resources.
