Essays on Philosophical Subjects comprises a series of essays gathered together by Smith's literary executors, Joseph Black and James Hutton, which they believed to have once been intended for a longer work on a history of the liberal sciences. A short biographical account by Dugald Stewart included here was one of the first ever printed about the life of Adam Smith.
