Lot Description

[Natural History] Von Zittel, Karl Alfred Ritter. Group of Teaching Wall Scrolls From the Palaentologie Wandtafeln Series

Kassel: Theodor Fischer, [late 19th/early 20th century]. Approximately 21 printed scrolls depicting various sea life including sponge, mollusks, arthropods, echinoderms, and vertical fish. Each backed by linen and measuring approximately 54 x 44 in., many with original wooden rollers. Some minor losses, toning, soiling.

Karl Alfred Ritter von Zittel was a German palaeontologist who in 1876 began work on Handbuch der Palaeontologie, one of the largest and most involved works on palaentology published in Europe during this time and a project that would not see completion until seventeen years later. He was elected president of the Royal Bavarian Academy of Sciences the following year, in part in recognition for this work. In 1894 the Geological Society of London awarded him the Wollaston Medal, its highest honor.

This lot is located in Chicago.
