Lot Description

[Americana] Ives, Joseph Christmas. Report Upon the Colorado River of the West, Under the Direction of the Office of Explorations and Surveys...

Washington: Government Printing Office, 1861. First Senate edition. 5 parts in one, large 4to. Frontispiece, 2 large folding maps, 1 engraved profile, 16 engraved views, 8 hand-colored illustrations of Native Americans, 9 folding panoramic views. Modern half morocco. some very minor tape repairs to maps, offsetting, spotting, plates under new tissue guards. Howes I-92; Sabin 35308; Wagner-Camp 375; Wheat, Transmississippi IV:98-101.

Among the members of the Ives expedition was Baron F.W. von Egloffstein, a topographer and artist who pioneered a style of map drawing that relied on shaded reliefs instead of hachures to delineate depth. The expedition was also noteworthy for being the first American expedition to explore the northernmost portion of the Grand Canyon; it was explored in its entirety in 1869 by John Wesley Powell. According to William Goetzmann, Ives's report is "the best by far of these individual reports...It is a long, carefully written journal, consciously literary but with a maximum amount of attention to scientific observation."

This lot is located in Chicago.
