Lot Description

[Literature] Steinbeck, John. East of Eden

New York: The Viking Press, 1942. First trade edition with the word "bite" in place of "bight" on p. 281, line 38. 8vo. Original lime green cloth lettered in green, spine lettered black on a brown background, glue residue from removed bookplate on front free endpaper; price-clipped dust jacket, darkening to spine, minor loss with accompanying crease to upper spine, wear to spine from sticker removal beneath author name. Goldstone & Payne A32b.

East of Eden was a great success upon its initial publication in September 1952, with Steinbeck writing to a friend that he was "getting flocks of letters... People write as though it were their book." It was later adapted into the 1955 film of the same name starring James Dean and directed by Elia Kazan.
