Particular focus is given to the actions of Lieutenant General James Longstreet, whose historical reputation tended to be tarnished by Lost Cause authors angered by his acceptance of the South's defeat and civil rights granted to freed slaves in the war's aftermath. It won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1975.
