New York: The Modern Library, no date (ca. 1960). 12mo. Original red cloth; in dust jacket, extremities chipped, some stains to front panel.
Modern Library edition of Katherine Anne Porter's Pale Horse, Pale Rider, a collection of three short stories, with a lengthy inscription by her of an anonymous seventeenth-century poem titled "As Life What Is So Sweet" on half-title: "'as life what is so sweet / what creature would not / choose thee / the wounded hart doth / weep / when he is forced to lose/ thee-/ The bruised worm doth / strive 'gainst fear of / death / and all choose life / with pain ere loss / of death.' Katherine Anne Porter / Nov 1 1960."
Together with two copies of a printed pamphlet for a speech by Porter at La Salle College on November 2, 1960 laid-in, one with an address in manuscript on front wrapper, presumably in Porter's hand.
