Lot Description
[Literature] [Lewis, Sinclair] Howard, Sidney. Sinclair Lewis's Dodsworth
New York: Harcourt, Brace, & Company, 1934. First and limited edition, signed by Sinclair Lewis, Sydney Howard and Maria Ouspenskaya. 8vo. Original cream-colored cloth, darkening to spine.
Dodsworth originated as a 1929 novel by Sinclair Lewis which was then adapted for the stage by future Gone with the Wind screenwriter Sidney Howard five years later. The first Broadway production opened on 24 February 1934 at the Shubert Theatre with Walter Huston in the lead role of Sam Dodsworth. Over the following year the play ran for a total of 315 performances. Howard later adapted his stage play into a screenplay which was made into a feature film again starring Huston and featuring Maria Ouspenskaya as Baroness Von Obersdorf; the film was nominated for seven Academy Awards, including an award for Ouspenskaya as Best Supporting Actress. In 2005 Dodsworth was listed as one of the best movies of the past eighty years by Time Magazine.
