From Here to Eternity was the first of James Jones's published works, and is loosely based on his experiences in pre-World War II Hawaii. It won the third annual National Book Award in 1952 and was adapted into a film of the same name the following year starring Burt Lancaster, Montgomery Clift, and Frank Sinatra.
