Possession was written in part as a response to John Fowles's The French Lieutenant's Woman. Her main characters, Randolph Henry Ash and Christabel LaMotte are based on the British poets Robert Browning and Christina Rosetti. It was adapted into a 2002 feature film starring Gwyneth Paltrow and Aaron Eckhart.
