The Dangling Man was the first published work by Saul Bellow, and along with his second work is considered to be an "apprentice" novel. Writing in The New Yorker, Edmund Wilson called it "One of the most honest pieces of testimony on the psychology of a whole generation who have grown up during the Depression and the war."
