Lot Description

[Law] Magna Charta, cum Statutis, tum Antiquis, tum Recentibus...

London: Printed [by Adam Islip] for the Companie of Stationers, 1608. 8vo (152 x 89 mm). Contemporary full vellum with yapped edges; soiling, corner losses and marginal chipping to rear, some minor marginal worming; some marginal soiling to concluding leaves. ownership inscription and stamp of Francis Logan. ESTC S122650; STC 9284.

The 1608 printing of the Magna Carta was championed by Sir Edward Coke (1552-1634), who considered it a foundational document which safeguarded the freedoms of English citizens. The present printing marks one of few executed during the lifetime of William Shakespeare, who curiously did not include any mention of the Magna Carta in his play The Life and Death of King John, suggesting that the document at this point was so obscure that Shakespeare himself had little knowledge of it.

This lot is located in Chicago.
