Washington, D.C.: by order of the United States' Senate, 1843. First edition. 8vo. 5 (of 6) plates only, also lacking folding map. "Fremont's first expedition to the Rockies was designed by his father-in-law, Sen. Thomas Hart Benton, to publicize the overland route to Oregon" (Wagner-Camp-Becker 95). Though this route was well-known to fur traders at the time, it was still outside the general public's knowledge.
