Lot Description
SANTA ANNA, Antonio López de (1794-1876). Document signed as President of Mexico, 8 February 1854.
SANTA ANNA, Antonio López de. Partly printed appointment signed ("A. L. de Sta. Anna"), as President of Mexico. 8 February 1854. Bifolium, 11 1/4 x 17 1/2 in. (folds, adhesive remnants, small tears along edge lines and folds). Interior pages docketed with additional signatures of Mexican officials. Document in Spanish, with original embossed paper seal including all eight "petals" extending from the center of the seal.
Document reads, in part (translation): "In view of the aptitude, merit and other circumstances that commend Mr. Guillermo Valle.... The president hereby confers the position of Judge of Letters of the Tlaxcala party to Mr. Guillermo Valle."
Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna exerted his strong influence on Mexican politics and government in the first half of the 19th-century, a time often referred to as the "Age of Santa Anna." He served non-consecutive presidential terms over a 22-year period, interspersed with the continued pursuit of his military career.
