Lot Description

[CIVIL WAR] CSA doc sgn'd by capt. of brigade that went farthest into enemy line at Pickett's Charge

[CIVIL WAR]. CSA document signed by Capt. Joseph J. Davis, 47th NC Infantry, Pettigrew's Brigade, who went the farthest into enemy lines during Pickett's Charge. Camp French, 27 November 1862.

One page, 8 1/4 x 10 7/8 in., creased along folds, with some toning, soiling, and wear to edges. Docketed verso. Undersigned by multiple officers including Captain William D. Bradford, Mississippi Confederate Guards Light Artillery;
Captain Joseph J. Davis, 47th North Carolina Infantry; and Captain Rhett R. S. Lawrence, 44th North Carolina Infantry.

An assessment of damages to the property of Thomas Dunn, Esq. of Chesterfield County, VA by the Confederate Army. The total estimated damage comes to $1,329.80. "The claimant's farm has been occupied by troops, more or less since the commencement of the war, and continually since the evacuation of Norfolk, and the Board is not informed as to by whom of the soldiers the damages specified were committed." Pencil note to lower left in a different hand notes that the claim should have the approval of General Pettigrew.

Pettigrew's Brigade, commanded at Gettysburg by Brigadier General James Johnson Pettigrew, and made up of several North Carolina infantry regiments including the 47th, formed the left flank of Pickett's charge, with support from behind by General Isaac R. Trimble's division. Some of Pettigrew and Trimble's men were found after the action deceased in Zeigler's grove and the apple orchard, beyond the stone wall, which would prove to be the furthest point of penetration of any troops in the infamous charge. Captain Joseph J. Davis himself was captured inside of the wall.
