Lot Description
[CIVIL WAR] 2 CDV albums cont. portraits of soldiers, naval subjects, and North and South Americans.
Lot comprised of 2 CDV albums, including:
10 x 8 in. photo album identified in gilt on front cover to "M.M. Hunt," containing approx. 152 CDVs and tintypes of men, women, and children, most unidentified (most with trimmed/rounded edges and corners). The images are credited to photographers operating in New York and New Jersey, with many taken by I.G. Owen, Newton, NJ. Featured subjects include: CDV of a Union soldier standing in a studio, his cap in hand, which appears to have "NY" insignia on the front, verso imprint of Collins, Syracuse, NY. -- CDV of a second lieutenant, verso imprint of I.G. Owen, Newton, NJ. -- Multiple charming studio portraits of children, some posed in military-inspired uniforms, one posed with his dog, and one young girl posed beside a sculpture of a woman.
[With:] 12 1/4 x 9 in. photo album containing approx. 85 CDVs and tintypes, along with 3 photographs mounted in the front and back of the album, approx. 5 1/2 x 3 3 /4 in. or smaller, one showing a residence, one showing a group of three unidentified men, and one showing an interior view of a residence (covers heavily worn, with areas of loss throughout; note that album is incomplete with some cartes removed by previous owner). The images are credited to photographers operating throughout the United States and abroad, including Santiago and Valparaiso, Chile, and Lima, Peru. Some subjects are identified in period manuscript on mount or on accompanying album pages. While the original owner of the album is unclear, the contents indicate that the individual may have been in the Navy. Highlighted subjects include: Multiple CDVs of young women from Guayaquil, Ecuador, Santiago, Chile, Lima and Valparaiso, Peru, some of which are identified or signed by the subject on verso. -- CDV of a young man in naval uniform identified as "Raym Rodgers," verso imprint of Chase and Bachrach, US Naval Academy, Annapolis, MD. -- CDV of a young man in naval uniform, inscribed on verso, "F (?) Linger." Uncredited. -- C.S. Rand, private secretary for Henry Meiggs, Esq., as per penciled notation on album page, verso imprint of Hermanos, Lima. Signed on verso. -- Fred Clapp in civilian dress, penciled notation on album page indicates he was at the Navy Yard in California, verso imprint of Bradley & Rulofson, San Francisco. Signed on verso. -- C.F. Perdie, identified as "2nd Asst. Engineer," as per penciled notation on album page, imprint of Cramer, San Francisco. Signed and dated 1870 on verso. -- Officer with penciled notation on album page identified the gentleman as "E.K. Moore, Major ?," verso imprint of Esposizione di Belle Arti, Napoli. -- 2 CDVs of a male and female actors in costume, performing scenes at the Naval Academy, each with period manuscript notation on verso identifying the scene and subjects. Each with verso imprint of Chase and Bachrach, US Naval Academy, Annapolis, MD. -- Seated portrait of a young naval officer identified on album page as Chief Engineer Williamson, USN, verso imprint of Chase and Bachrach, US Naval Academy, Annapolis, MD. -- CDV of a mustachioed man identified on album page as Don Roger, Professor of Spanish, US Naval Academy, verso imprint of H.S. Clark, Green Bay, WI. -- CDV, outdoor view of a Naval subject standing aboard a ship, with period notation on verso that is difficult to discern. Uncredited. -- CDV, sated portrait of Purser Brown, PSS Chili, manuscript identification on verso dated 20 November 1869. Uncredited. -- Several photos of women and children, some identified on album pages, including portraits by S.M. Fassett, Chicago, IL, W.M. Knight, Buffalo, NY, Decker, Cleveland, OH, and H.S.
