Lot Description

[WILD WEST SHOWS]. 2 cabinet cards of "Kentucky Frank" and "Texas Jack Jr."

Cabinet photograph of "Kentucky Frank" standing in a studio setting dressed in western attire with a pistol tucked in his belt and a saddle in hand. Cincinnati, OH: F.M. Titus, ca 1890s. Verso ink stamped with photographer's credit and the following, "Kentucky Frank and Little Fawn, Fancy Western Leather Workers." Born George Franklin Russell (1853-1936), "Kentucky Frank" was a Wild West show performer and master leather worker based in Cincinnati, OH.

[With:] Cabinet photograph of a confident looking young man wearing a large medal on his chest, with a pistol tucked in his belt, identified as "Texas Jack" in lower margin. Liverpool, England: Medrington, ca late 1880s. Photographer's imprint on mount recto and verso. The photograph depicts Texas Jack Jr. (ca 1860-1905), adopted son of Texas Jack Omohundro. At the age of 5 years old, he was orphaned when his parents were killed by Native Americans. Texas Jack Omohundro found the young boy and took him in. As a result, the young man began to call himself Texas Jack Jr. Following the death of Omohundro in 1880, he dropped the "Jr.," as evidenced in the cabinet card offered here. Texas Jack became a sharpshooter and rough rider, performing in shows around the world. He was best known for running "Texas Jack's Wild West Show & Circus," and for giving Will Rogers his start as an entertainer.
