Lot Description

[REVOLUTIONARY WAR]. CDV of Revolutionary War survivor "Daniel Waldo, Aged 102." Hartford, CT, 1864.

CDV on cardstock mount with printed caption in lower margin, which reads, "Daniel Waldo, Aged 102, One of the Survivors of the Revolution." Hartford, CT: N.A. and R.A. Moore, 1864.

Daniel Waldo (1762-1864), born in Windham, Connecticut, was drafted as a soldier in the Revolutionary War in 1778 at the age of 16 for a month-long service at New London. He then enlisted for eight months in the service of the State, and during this term, he was taken prisoner by the Tories at Horseneck in March, 1779. His imprisonment lasted two months. Upon his release, he went on to attend and graduate from Yale College. Waldo then studied theology. He later became both a missionary and a clergyman. In 1856, at the age of 94, Waldo was appointed Chaplain of the House of Representatives, a position he held until his death.
