Lot Description
[NATIVE AMERICANS]. Cabinet card of Yamapi, A Runner for Ute Chief Ouray. Denver: W.G. Chamberlain.
Cabinet photograph of Yamapi, identified in lower margin as "Yam-An-Atz - Chief Ourays' Runer [sic]." Verso with credit to W.G. Chamberlain, Denver, CO. Recto and verso with ink stamps of John P. Lower, Denver, CO.
Originally taken during the Ute delegation in Washington by William Henry Jackson, the image shows Yamapi wearing a vest, striped sash, and peace medal. Ca 1880.
John P. Lower (1833-1917) was a Colorado pioneer gunsmith and firearms retailer. He owned and operated Sportsmen's Depot in Denver, where he conducted business with many legendary figures of the 19th and early 20th centuries, including William F. "Buffalo Bill" Cody, Kit Carson, and George Custer. Lower amassed a large collection of artifacts, many from the early Colorado frontier, including firearms and Native American peace medals. The Ute Indians purportedly used his store as their headquarters and traded historical objects with Lower for weaponry.
