Lot Description
[LINCOLN, ABRAHAM (1809-1865)]. 5 stereoviews of the vault at Oak Ridge Cemetery, Springfield, IL.
5 stereoviews on yellow cardstock mounts, including: A view by Ridgeway Glover featuring the receiving vault surrounded by many soldiers and men dressed in suits, titled "Vault with Directors and Guards." 22 May 1865. Title and copyright printed on mount recto (heavy toning, soiling, wear). -- A view by A. C. Townsend, Enterprise Gallery, Springfield, IL, featuring the vault from a distance, the doors opened. Photographer's imprint on verso. -- Double-sided view featuring the vault at a distance on one side and an unrelated church scene on verso. -- And 2 other views of the closed vault with men standing or sitting just outside, guarding it. -- Together, 5 views.
The receiving vault at Oak Ridge Cemetery is where Lincoln's body was placed upon its arrival at the cemetery in Springfield on 4 May, until 21 December 1865, when it was moved into a temporary tomb halfway up the hill upon which his final resting place and permanent tomb would be constructed. Oak Ridge is what Mary Todd Lincoln determined best fit her husband's wish for "some quiet place" to rest once he had passed away.
