Lot Description

[BOOTH, John Wilkes (1838-1865)]. Group of 3 CDVs, plus.


Seated portrait of Booth looking contemplative in an ornate chair with upholstered and fringed arms (rich tonality, some blotching in background, some wear to mount). Lebanon, NH: Billings & Hough, n.d. Photographers' imprint on verso along with 2-cent revenue stamp. -- Seated portrait of Booth with his hand under his chin, posed in a different studio chair with upholstered and fringed arm (image cracked/creased down central vertical line, toning, soiling, wear throughout). New York: C. W. Thorne, n.d. Thorne's stamp on verso along with ink identification: "W. Booth." -- Standing portrait of Booth posed Napoleonically. Uncredited. 2-cent revenue stamp affixed to verso. -- Together, 3 CDVs of John Wilkes Booth.

[With:] Partial CDV of Edwin Booth dressed and posed as Iago from the play Othello (rich tonality, few spots, clipped on all sides). Small ink stamp to verso identifying image as part of "The Roy Day Collection."

[With:] Reproduction broadside, 5 3/8 x 18 5/8 in. (creases, few small separations to interior and chips to edges, spotting throughout). Broadside announces the Friday, April 14th 1865 performance of Our American Cousin at Ford's Theatre, to be attended by President Abraham Lincoln. Accompanied by typewritten letter from the Library of Congress Rare Book Division Chief identifying this piece as a "spurious playbill," and 2 photocopied pages from a resource on Ford's Theatre playbills detailing why this example is not, in fact, an authentic example of a playbill handed out at Ford's Theatre on the night of the assassination.
