Lot comprised of approx. 100 images of of 19th century personalities, including performers, politicians, abolitionists, writers, poets, theologians, and other figures of the period. Highlights include:
47 cabinet cards of various subjects, some identified, credited to photographers throughout the United States, including Brady (Washington, DC), Bell (Washington, DC), Pack (New York), Rockwood (New York), Sarony (New York), Mora (New York), Notman Photo Co. (Boston, MA), Hardy (Boston, MA), Warrens (Boston, MA), Conly (Boston, MA), Van Norman (Waltham, MA), Taber (San Francisco), Park Brothers (Toronto, Ontario), Hendricks & Co. (Greensburg, PA), and Baker's Art Gallery (Columbus, OH). Highlighted subjects include: William Everts. -- Cornelius Vanderbilt II. -- Oliver Wendell Holmes. -- Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. -- Ralph Waldo Emerson. -- J.B. Booth. -- Solomon Foot. -- Charles Lyman. -- C.R. Breckinridge. -- Belle Harper. -- Stephen Field. -- General J.H. Howe. -- Blanche Howard. -- Man dressed in arctic costume. -- Washington Monument. -- And others. Some photos feature notes, including making sure that the appropriate photographer is credited, suggesting that some may have been used for publication. (Conditions vary, ranging from fair to very good, with toning, occasional soiling and spotting, edge and corner wear to mounts.)
[With:] CDV in paper sleeve of Captain Bussius, with inked notation below printed identification, "Commanding the North German Lloyd Steamer "Veckar (?)". Dessau, Bremen, Hannover: Emil Tiedemann. (Toning, some soiling to print and sleeve.) -- 6 large format photographs on cardstock mounts, approx. 11 3/4 x 7 3/8 in. or smaller. Subjects include the Carlin Brothers, who appear to be gymnasts, signed "Compliments Carlin Bros., May 4th, 1883," credited to Guerin, St. Louis, MO; possibly C.W. Couldock, as penciled on verso, attributed to Scholten, St. Louis, MO; portraits of actors or affluent figures by Falk and Sarony, New York. (Toning, some soiling, edge and corner wear to mounts.)
[With:] 46 albumen photographs, approx. 5 3/8 x 3 3/4 in., mounted recto/verso on disbound album pages. Some subjects are identified below images on album pages. Highlighted subjects include: Henry Ward Beecher (2). -- Horatio Potter. -- W.C. Bryant. -- Adelaide Ristori. -- Bianca Ristori. -- Stephen Massett. -- Père Hyacinthe. -- Charlotte Cushman. -- Bayard Taylor. -- John T. Hoffman. -- Charles Dana. -- Kate Field. (Overall very good).
[Also with:] Photograph of Ralph E. Emerson, approx. 8 1/2 x 6 in., identified and inscribed in the lower margin, in a different hand, "Ralph Emerson, Presented by his daughters, Mary Emerson Lathrop, Belle Emerson Keith," with multiple dates listed. Matted and framed, 18 x 15 in. (Toning, some soiling to print, not examined out of frame.) Ralph E. Emerson (1831-1914) was a prominent citizen of Rockford, IL. Research indicates that he was friends with Abraham Lincoln.
